On shrubs and small fruit trees, two 8 L/h drippers placed on either side of the trunk, 20-30 cm from the base, prevent water pooling against the bark while irrigating the active root zone.
Installing a micro-irrigation network step by step
Household water pressure often exceeds 3 bar, while a standard dripper operates between 1 and 2.5 bar. A pressure reducer fitted at the head of the network, right after the tap, protects the fittings and stabilizes flow along the full length of the hose. A 120 to 150 mesh screen filter, placed immediately after, catches the particles that clog drippers over time, especially if the water comes from a rainwater harvesting tank rather than the mains supply.

Network maintenance to prevent clogging
Flushing the network by opening the line ends two to three times per season clears out limescale and deposits that reduce the flow of self-regulating drippers. The filter should be cleaned at the same frequency, especially with well or tank water, which carries more particles than mains water. Before winter, fully draining the network and storing the timer somewhere frost-free prevents cracks in plastic fittings exposed to sub-zero temperatures.
