How to choose a watering can based on your gardening needs

A watering can is chosen first and foremost by its capacity and weight when full. A 1.5 to 2 liter model is enough for indoor plants or young seedlings, while an 8 to 12 liter container becomes necessary for a vegetable patch or garden beds. As a benchmark, a full 10-liter watering can weighs around 10 kg: beyond that, carrying comfort drops sharply, especially over several trips. Handle shape matters as much as capacity: a tall, arched handle distributes weight better across the forearm than a short handle fixed at the top, which forces you to bend your wrist.

Galvanized zinc watering cans: the long-lasting choice

Galvanized zinc resists corrosion thanks to a surface treatment that forms a protective layer of zinc oxide on contact with air. A watering can of this type lasts fifteen to twenty years of outdoor use without leaking, compared to three to five years for a plastic model exposed continuously to UV rays. The trade-off is empty weight, often 30 to 40% higher than an equivalent plastic model of the same capacity, and a purchase price generally between 25 and 45 euros for an 8 to 10 liter size.

Zinc maintenance and points to watch

A zinc watering can should never be left filled with stagnant water for several days in winter: freezing expands the metal at the seams and causes cracks where the body meets the spout, the structurally weakest point. Rinsing and storing it empty, spout facing down, limits this risk.

Plastic watering cans: lightweight for everyday use

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) equips the majority of indoor and balcony watering cans. It doesn’t rust, withstands impacts without deforming, and stays about 40% lighter when empty than a comparable metal model. Its limit is UV resistance: a watering can left permanently outdoors in full sun becomes brittle and yellows within two to three seasons, with a risk of micro-cracks around the neck. For strictly indoor use, this constraint disappears and plastic becomes the most rational choice.

The watering can rose: a detail that changes everything

The number and diameter of the rose’s holes directly determine how fine the spray is. A fine rose, with 200 to 300 perforations under a millimeter, suits seedlings and young plants that can’t withstand a concentrated stream capable of dislodging shallow roots. A coarser rose, with holes of 1.5 to 2 mm, delivers more water per second and suits deep watering of already-rooted plants, such as tomatoes or shrubs.

Adjustable or fixed spout

• Fixed spout with removable rose: versatility between a directed stream at the base of plants and a fine shower for foliage
• Long, tapered spout without rose: precision for orchids and potted plants where water needs to reach the base without wetting the leaves

Capacity and watering frequency by type of growing area

A balcony with ten pots needs on average 3 to 4 liters per watering session in summer, which makes a 5-liter watering can sufficient without multiple trips back to the tap. A 20 m² vegetable patch easily uses 15 to 20 liters per watering in dry periods: in that case, two 8-liter cans are more manageable than a single 15-liter model, which becomes hard to handle one-handed once full when aiming at the base of each plant.

Spotting a poorly designed watering can before buying

A simple test before purchase: with the can empty, tilt the spout to 45 degrees as if watering. If the imaginary water would seem to need to rise above the spout’s level before flowing out, the balance between the handle’s pivot point and the spout’s position is miscalculated, and the can will drip or overflow from the top during use. This flaw mainly affects entry-level models where the spout is simply attached without any study of the center of gravity once the reservoir is full.
