Soil tester: which to choose between a pH meter, moisture meter and NPK probe?

A soil sensor measures one specific parameter: acidity, moisture, conductivity or nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium content. No device under €60 does everything accurately; the “5-in-1” models sold for €12 give a rough indication, useful for spotting overly dry soil but not for fine-tuning a fertilizer dose. A market gardener tracking a plot’s pH needs a different tool than someone who simply wants to know if their ficus is thirsty.

The dual-electrode pH tester

Soil pH typically ranges between 4.5 (acidic, peaty soil) and 8.5 (chalky soil). Dual-electrode models, such as the Kelway type used by agronomists since the 1960s, planted 10 cm deep in pre-moistened soil, give a stable reading in 60 seconds. Without moistening the soil around the probe, the device often shows a false neutral pH due to insufficient electrical contact — the most common mistake among beginners.

The probe-type moisture meter

These battery-free analog devices measure the soil’s electrical resistance on a scale of 1 to 10. A reading of 1-3 signals dry soil in need of watering, 4-7 corresponds to ideal moisture for most houseplants, and 8-10 indicates excess water and a risk of root rot. The probe must be inserted down to the base of the roots, not just at the surface, or the reading will be skewed by the dry potting soil layer on top.

Connected soil sensor: what Bluetooth adds

Connected probes such as Xiaomi’s Mi Flora combine four measurements — light, moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity (EC, in mS/cm) — relayed via an app. The CR2032 battery lasts about a year. The real value isn’t the single reading, already available on a €10 analog model, but the history: a thirty-day moisture graph reveals an irregular watering cycle that a one-off glance would never show. For a single houseplant, the expense is hard to justify; for a vegetable patch or a collection of several pots, cross-tracking becomes genuinely useful.

NPK probe: measuring nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium

Electronic NPK testers, not to be confused with a simple pH meter, insert three electrodes into the soil and display indicative values in ppm. Their accuracy remains approximate compared to a laboratory agronomic analysis, but they’re enough to detect a marked nitrogen deficiency (yellowing foliage) before it becomes visible to the naked eye. A reading taken right after applying fertilizer will be completely skewed: wait at least two weeks for the nutrients to spread through the soil.

Criteria for choosing a soil tester

  • Occasional use on one or two plants: battery-free analog moisture meter, €8-15
  • Ongoing monitoring of several plants: connected probe with history, €25-40
  • Vegetable patch or plot needing fertilizer adjustment: separate pH tester + NPK probe, €20-50 each

Measurement mistakes to avoid

A probe planted in perfectly dry soil conducts no electrical signal: the displayed result is then worthless, whether it’s a pH or moisture tester. Cleaning the electrode after each use prevents oxidation, which skews subsequent readings on entry-level models without gold-plated contacts. Finally, an analog tester is no substitute for a lab analysis if the goal is to correct soil in depth before major planting: it’s meant for tracking a trend, not for a full agronomic diagnosis.
