Irrigation and appliance timers and controllers: which one to choose
A controller runs a cycle over time, a timer triggers or cuts an action after a set duration. Confusing the two terms gets expensive at purchase: a 6-station irrigation controller is useless on a single tap, and a 60-minute mechanical timer will never replace a multi-cycle controller for a 200 m² garden. The connection to the tap is worth checking for thread type: most consumer irrigation controllers fit 3/4 inch (20/27) threads, the standard for French outdoor taps, but some imported models come with US threading and need an adapter.
Maintenance and lifespan
An irrigation controller left in place over winter without draining will freeze and crack its internal housing at the first sub-zero temperatures: removing it and storing it somewhere dry between November and March extends its lifespan by several seasons.
